Abstract for Research Report (Purpose)This workshop focuses on the "integration of machine learning and mathematical modeling". We will discuss both theory and implementation, aiming to recognize new issues and to establish a cross-disciplinary research collaboration. In recent years, machine learning has been used in a wide range of fields, such as diagnosing and predicting the onset of diseases, predicting natural disasters and understanding the damage state, optimizing recommendation systems on EC sites, and resolving traffic congestion. On the other hand, to solve such social problems, mathematical models have usually been constructed using differential equations and discrete dynamical systems, and their mathematical analysis and numerical simulations have been effectively used. In this workshop, experts in machine learning and mathematical modeling will gather to discuss how we can complement with each other and explore the possibility of constructing new models that solve social issues.
(Expected results) By bringing together researchers and graduate students from a wide range of fields, such as topology, network theory, and numerical analysis, with companies that utilize AI, we expect to discover potential applications and implementations of machine learning techniques in various fields, which will in turn trigger joint research with companies.
The participation of researchers familiar with mathematical theory such as functional analysis is also expected to help us develop basic theories of machine learning, such as optimization theory and estimation theory of modeling errors.
In addition, there are a relatively large number of female graduate school students in the department of mathematical engineering of Musashino University, to which the organizers belong. By inviting some of them who are interested in machine learning and mathematical modeling and requesting them to present their research, it is expected that they will be able to interact with the researchers in various fields and engage in more fulfilling research activities.
